Mountain rescue teams across England and Wales say they are working flat out to deal with a growing number of calls from novice walkers.

Volunteer teams in some areas are being called out three times a week, in some cases when ramblers simply have no map.

North Wales rescuers have taken 25% more calls this year, while England’s Lake District teams predict a 10 to 15% increase on last year’s 464 call-outs.

The British Mountaineering Council says walkers and climbers should take responsibility for their safety.

Mountain Rescue in England and Wales, the body that oversees the work of regional teams, is to hold talks with the council, as well as national park authorities, to discuss how they can help better prepare walkers
