Measles cases continue to be reported across Wales, which is facing an outbreak of the infection with the majority of cases in the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg, Powys and Hywel Dda Health Board areas.
Public Health Wales revealed yesterday (11 April 2013) that 693 cases have so far been reported in the outbreak, which is centred on the Swansea area.
A total of 1,726 people were vaccinated at special drop-in clinics last weekend, and over 900 people were vaccinated in GP surgeries. But Public Health Wales warns that this is not enough to bring the outbreak under control, and is urging parents of unvaccinated children across Wales to act immediately to ensure they are protected against the disease.
Unvaccinated children aged between six and 12 months living in or travelling to the outbreak areas of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot can receive the vaccine from their GP. Details of further vaccination sessions and advice on preventing the spread of the illness has been posted online by Public Health Wales.
A public health update on measles for community pharmacists is also available, from the website of the Wales Centre for Pharmacy Professional Education.
