Perkins & Will has beaten an international shortlist including Foster & Partners and Dutch practice KCAP to turn Edmonton’s former airport into a new city quarter for up to 30,000 residents.

The Vancouver practice’s winning plan for the 217ha city centre redevelopment project creates a “sustainable community focused on providing strong connections to nature, history, economic opportunity and surrounding neighbourhoods”, said the judges.

Dubbed Connect-i-city, it was designed in collaboration with Civitas Urban Design & Planning, Group2 Architecture and landscape architect Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg (PFS).

The city council’s vision was for an environmentally sustainable, transit-oriented, mixed-use development which took the best of Edmonton’s neighbourhoods and the best international ideas.

The original 33 international submissions were whittled down to five in 2010, and to three in May this year before the winner was announced this month.

The council and Perkins & Will will negotiate a contract over the next month detailing the project deliverables, the work plan schedule and the public engagement plan.
