Z-A Studio and ICrave have won a competition to design a pop-up chapel in New York to celebrate the legalisation of gay marriage.
The two successful designs will be built on Saturday at Merchants’ Gate in Central Park and operate till dusk.
The competition to be married there was as tough as the design competition. Just 24 couples – already chosen – will be wed in the two mini-chapels. Each couple will be allowed 12 guests since the buildings are no larger than 2.5sq m.
The competition, run by Architizer and The Knot, attracted entries from more than 56 designers who had just 10 days to complete their proposals.
The winners will each receive $3,000.
Z-A Studio’s entry, Kiss, is made from recycled cardboard stacked in twisted waves on a plywood base.
ICrave’s Pop Up Chapel has been described as an “effervescent cascade of hanging ribbons”. A metal frame is covered with white ribbon with multi-coloured ribbons of varying lengths hanging from a mesh ceiling.
