Alan Partridge could be in line for a return to the BBC after a 14-year absence, as Steve Coogan revealed he is “trying to devise” a new series featuring the inept presenter.

Appearing on BBC1’s The One Show on Friday, Coogan said that he was planning to resurrect the character.

“There will be a lot of Alan on TV next year,” he said. “He’ll just be back on a show. It might be a bit like this kind of show, maybe.”

The last series of I’m Alan Partridge aired on BBC2 in 2002, while spin-off series Anglian Lives: Alan Partridge aired the following year. Apart from a handful of appearances as part of charity fundraiser Comic Relief, the character’s main home since 2011 has been on Sky Atlantic’s radio show parody Mid Morning Matters, produced by Baby Cow Productions.

The last series of Mid Morning Matters aired to 111,000 (0.6%) across its six-parts in early 2016.

Partridge was originally created by Coogan and Armando Iannucci for the 1991 BBC Radio 4 comedy programme On the Hour, as a spoof of current affairs broadcasting.

The BBC was unable to provide further details of the show at this stage.
