The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is building the world’s leading movie museum in the heart of Los Angeles. Located in the historic Wilshire May Company building on the campus of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the six stories Academy Museum was greenlighted by the Academy’s Board of Governors in October 2012.
Creating a Beacon for Cultural Tourism
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be the world’s premier film museum and one of Los Angeles’s leading cultural institutions. The entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles has more museums and theaters than any city in the U.S. The Academy Museum will join world class museums including the Getty Center and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in attracting visitors from all over the world. In 2014 Los Angeles had a record 36.9 million domestic and 6.5 million international visitors. The Academy Museum will provide a much needed destination for cultural tourists looking to celebrate the magic and imagination of Hollywood and the movies. More than 400,000 tourists are expected to visit the Academy Museum each year.
